HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Off to it's best start since 2018, the Southern Miss volleyball team heads to Jacksonville, Ala. to participate in the Jacksonville State Invitational. The Golden Eagles hold a record of 5-2, and look to improve their mark at their third tournament of the season.
Southern Miss last took the floor at the Crimson Tide Invitational in Tuscaloosa, Ala. last weekend. The Black and Gold overcame Troy in four sets, but fell to Buffalo and host Alabama to go 1-2 on the weekend.
Senior hitter Kinsley Hanback was named to the Crimson Tide Invitational All-Tournament team for her efforts throughout the weekend. She tallied 32 kills and nine blocks over the three matches. Her most impressive performance came on Sept. 4 against Alabama, where Hanback posted 15 kills and three blocks with a hitting percentage of .448.
The Golden Eagles are set to take on three opponents who have started the 2021 season with a combined record of 15-4. Matches against South Alabama, Nicholls and Jacksonville State will serve as opportunities to sharpen skills and improve as a unit before the Conference USA schedule begins in a few weeks.
Southern Miss first takes on South Alabama Jaguars on Friday at 1:30 p.m., who are coming off of a 1-2 weekend at the Golden Eagle Invitational. The Golden Eagles battle the 5-1 Nicholls Colonels Saturday morning at 11 a.m. before facing off with host Jacksonville State at 6 p.m.
As a team, the Golden Eagles' 373 kills and 345 assists both rank second in the nation as of Sept. 5. Mia Wesley's 94 kills (26th in the NCAA) and Kenzie Smith's 262 assists (9th in the NCAA) have helped Southern Miss to a 5-2 record. Aliah Giroux's 121 digs are the 12th highest for an individual throughout the start of the 2021 season.
The Golden Eagles will look to tack on three victories to their record this weekend at the Jacksonville State Invitational. Southern Miss takes on South Alabama on Friday at 1:30 p.m. The Black and Gold will then face off with Nicholls on Saturday at 11 a.m. before dueling with host Jacksonville State at 6 p.m., which will be streamed on ESPN+.
