Melich Paces Golden Eagles in USA Intercollegiate Opening Round

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -Â The Southern Miss women's golf team opened play at the USA Intercollegiate with freshman Elena Melich firing a 72 to stay at even par. The Golden Eagles carded a 21-over par as a team to head into the clubhouse at Magnolia Grove Golf Club in 15th place.Â
Melich netted four birdies to finish T15 in the individual standings. Friend Chompitakdacha ended her day with a six-over 78 after paring six of the final seven holes. The junior sits T74 with one birdie on her scorecard. Sophomore Merche Corbacho also fired a 78 with one birdie to her name. Newcomers Jacee Fields and Icie Cockerham each netted an 81 to finish eight strokes over par.
The Golden Eagles tee off for the second round at 8:00 a.m. Sunday morning. The second round will be played on The Crossings Course at Magnolia Grove Golf Club.
