HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Â Conference USA volleyball comes to the Wellness Center for the first time this season, as the Golden Eagles face off with the UTSA Roadrunners this weekend.Â
The Golden Eagles last faced off with the Roadrunners in a pair of matches in San Antonio, Texas on March 14-15, 2021. Southern Miss and UTSA split the series, with the Black and Gold winning the latter match in a five-set thriller. The Roadrunners hold a 12-1 advantage in the all-time series between the C-USA foes.
Southern Miss has been stellar at home throughout the 2021 season. The Golden Eagles are tied with Western Kentucky for the best home record in the C-USA, as both programs have gone 7-1 at home to start the season. Southern Miss has won 23 of 30 sets at the Wellness Center, and looks to continue its success at home against UTSA.
UTSA travels to Hattiesburg for the first time since 2019, and this weekend's series will mark the first meetings between the Golden Eagles and Roadrunners at the Wellness Center. The previous matches between the programs in Hattiesburg took place at the former home of Southern Miss volleyball, the Reed Green Coliseum.Â
Southern Miss last took the floor last weekend in Birmingham, Ala., opening conference play against the UAB Blazers in a pair of matches. The Golden Eagles fell to the Blazers by scores of 3-0 and 3-1, falling to an 8-8 record on the season.
The Roadrunners enter this weekend with a record of 5-9, but ride into this series with a wave of momentum. UTSA opened its C-USA slate at home last weekend, dispatching the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs in a pair of matches, including a sweep on Friday, Sept. 24.
The Golden Eagles will look to their offense to lead them to a pair of conference victories this weekend. Southern Miss leads the NCAA as of Sept. 30 in total kills with 814 and assists with 754. The Black and Gold has also been efficient defensively, sitting in sixth for total digs in 2021, with 980 to start the year.
Southern Miss takes on the UTSA Roadrunners on Friday, Oct. 1 at 6 p.m. and on Saturday, Oct. 2 at 12 p.m. at the Wellness Center. Admission is free to both matches and free T-Shirts will be available while supplies last.Â
