Golden Eagles Fall to Southeastern in Five Sets

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Despite strong offensive performances from several Golden Eagles, the Southern Miss volleyball program dropped its first match at the Wellness Center, following a 3-2 loss to the Southeastern Lady Lions. The Golden Eagles' record falls to 8-6 on the season.Â
Four Golden Eagles, Mia Wesley, Lauren Talbert, Duquesne Moratzka and Kinsley Hanback, posted double-digit kills against the Lady Lions. Talbert posted a career-high 17 kills in Tuesday's matchup.
Kenzie Smith dished out a career-high 56 assists for Southern Miss, while four defenders recorded 10 or more digs in a valiant defensive effort. The Golden Eagles still lead the all-time series between the programs, 35-24.
Set One, Southern Miss 25, Southeastern 15: Southern Miss kicked off its match against Southeastern with a dominant set one victory. The Golden Eagles were more effective than the Lady Lions in every aspect of the game, recording 20 kills, 17 assists and 18 digs in the opening frame. SLU was held to a hitting percentage of .162 compared to Southern Miss' .400.
Wesley and Talbert led their team with efficient offense, as the pair recorded 12 of the Golden Eagles' 20 kills during the first set. Talbert (.625) and Wesley (.500) were efficient for the Black and Gold, while Smith dished out 13 assists to her attackers in the opening frame.
Set Two, Southern Miss 29, Southeastern 27: The Golden Eagles battled hard, securing the second set, 29-27 over the Lady Lions. Southern Miss was able to ride the strong play of Moratzka, who registered eight kills at a .500 clip to take the lead, 2-0.
Southern Miss was able to pick up three service aces in the frame, along with four blocks, two of which came from Hanback. Smith added 17 assists, bringing her total to 26 through two sets.
Set Three, Southern Miss 20, Southeastern 25: The Southern Miss hitters had difficulty gaining momentum in a third set that saw SLU win their first frame of the match. The Golden Eagles were only able to muster 12 kills, compared to the Lady Lions 18. Cara Atkinson was efficient in the third frame, with four kills on five total attempts.
Set Four, Southern Miss 17, Southeastern 25: Southeastern were more effective on offense, leading to the match being tied, 2-2 following the fourth set. Wesley led the Golden Eagles in kills in the fourth frame, with five, followed by Talbert with four.Â
Set Five, Southern Miss 9, Southeastern 15: Southern Miss dropped its first match at home following a fifth set won by Southeastern by a score of 15-9. Sicily Hidalgo recorded five kills in the final set, which upped her total to 30 for the match, a record for the Lady Lion volleyball program.
The Golden Eagles travel to Birmingham, Ala. to start Conference USA play this weekend. Southern Miss takes on UAB on Friday, Sept. 24 at 6 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 25 at 2 p.m.Â
