Golden Eagles Fall to UAB in Straight Sets

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Golden Eagles (8-7, 0-1 C-USA) opened Conference USA action against the UAB Blazers (5-6, 1-0 C-USA) in the first of two matches this weekend. Southern Miss struggled to generate offense and fell to the Blazers in straight sets.
Southern Miss battled hard throughout the match, dropping the first two sets, 25-21 and 25-23. Despite this, the Golden Eagles fall to 8-7 and 0-1 in conference play this season.
Mia Wesley led her squad with eight kills, while Kenzie Smith dished out 21 assists on Southern Miss' 23 kills. Five Golden Eagles recorded multiple kills, while Aliah Giroux tallied 11 digs.Â
Set One, Southern Miss 21, UAB 25: The Golden Eagles and Blazers battled in a close opening set, with UAB coming out on top, 25-21. Wesley opened the match with four kills with a hitting percentage of .667, while Giroux recorded 8 digs.
Southern Miss was able to hold UAB to a hitting percentage of .065, but a combination of hitting struggles and service troubles for the Golden Eagles allowed the Blazers to take a 1-0 lead in the match.Â
Set Two, Southern Miss 23, UAB 25: Southern Miss fought valiantly in the second set, but fell to the Blazers, 25-23. The Golden Eagles posted their best hitting percentage of the match (.269), but it ultimately was not enough to overcome UAB in the second frame.Â
Smith assisted on 89% of her team's kills in set two. Southern Miss and UAB battled through 13 tied scores and seven lead changes in the second set alone before the Blazers took a 2-0 lead in the match.
Set Three, Southern Miss 15, UAB 25: Southern Miss dropped its first conference match of the season following a 25-15 set defeat in the third and final frame. The Blazers hit at a .394 clip in the set, while the Golden Eagles struggled to generate offense.
