HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss volleyball team takes the floor this Friday as the host of the Southern Miss Classic. The Golden Eagles will take on MVSU and SIU on Friday before battling USC Upstate and Louisiana on Saturday.
Head coach Stephanie Radecki will lead the Golden Eagles into the 2021 season, her fourth at the helm of the program. After finishing the 2020-21 season with a record of 9-10, Radecki, along with her assistant coaches Jennifer McCall and Darian Mack, look to get Southern Miss off to a strong start. This begins with the Southern Miss Classic.
The Golden Eagles prepared for the season last Friday in an exhibition match against Mississippi State. Southern Miss came out strong, winning the first set of the night before dropping the match, 3-1.
Newcomer Mia Wesley led the Black and Gold in kills during the exhibition with 15 and also notched 2 service aces. Cara Atkinson, Kinsley Hanback, Reagan Leinen also recorded double-digit kills in the contest.
Southern Miss welcomes four programs to the Wellness Center this weekend. The Golden Eagles will first face MVSU on Friday at 3 p.m. The Delta Devils look to bounce back after a difficult 2020-21 season, where they finished with a record of 0-10. The SIU Salukis, a program that finished last season with a 2-18 record, will serve as the next challenge for Southern Miss at 7:30 p.m.
The Golden Eagles' first matchup on Saturday will be USC Upstate, who finished the 2020-21 season with a six-game win streak. Southern Miss will round out its weekend against the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns, who are led by first-year head coach Kristi Gray.
The Southern Miss Classic serves as an opening test for the Golden Eagles. A gauntlet of four matches in two days will put the program to the test and set the tone for the season.
The Golden Eagles will host the Southern Miss Classic this Friday and Saturday at the Volleyball Wellness Center. Admission is free and fans at home can stream the action on CUSA.tv.
