GRAMBLING, La. – The Southern Miss soccer program notched its first win of the season as the Golden Eagles scored in extra time to beat Grambling State, 1-0, on Sunday, Aug. 22, at the GSU Soccer Complex.
The Black and Gold dominated Grambling State in shots with a 16-4 mark and led shots on goal, 9-1. Freshman Ryan Smith (Biloxi, Miss-Biloxi HS) led the USM offensively with the game's only goal. Graduate Alice Campos (Campinas, Brazil-Northwestern Oklahoma State) had another offensive showing providing Smith with the assist, while she tallied two shots of her own.
Five Golden Eagles saw the full 90 minutes of play with five coming off the bench to see action. Campos was given a yellow card in the 71st minute of play.
Extra time was needed as two regular time periods were not enough to separate the Golden Eagles and Tigers. In the 96th minute, Ryan Smith scored her first collegiate goal to give USM its first win on the season.
Southern Miss will host its home opener against Nicholls State, Thursday, Aug. 26, at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex for a 5 p.m. start.
