HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss volleyball team opened the 2021 season on Friday night against Mississippi State in an exhibition match. The Golden Eagles won the first set, but were unable to solve the Bulldogs in the final three frames as MSU went home with a 3-1 victory.
Southern Miss and Mississippi State battled hard in a close first set. While momentum shifted throughout the frame, the Black and Gold pushed through to win the set by a score of 25-23. Â Senior Duquesne Moratzka led the way for Southern Miss with five kills, followed closely by freshman Cara Atkinson and sophomore Mia Wesley who both recorded three kills each. Senior Lauren Talbert led by example with a service ace and three digs. The Eagles outperformed MSU offensively with 14 kills compared to the Bulldogs' nine in the opening set.
The second set of the contest featured the same back and forth action of set one. MSU fought off a Southern Miss comeback late in the frame and tied the match after taking set two 25-21. The Eagles trailed in the kill category as Mississippi State put up 17 to USM's 13. Wesley led Southern Miss in set two with five kills, followed by senior Kinsley Hanback's four kills. Talbert and Moratzka both tallied five digs.
MSU built upon the foundation set in the second set, taking the third frame by a score of 25-19. Sophomore Reagan Leinen put up three kills for the Black and Gold while senior Kenzie Smith recorded four digs in set three. The Bulldogs continued to pour on the pressure, winning the fourth and final set by a score of 25-22.
"We came out really strong in the first set, we did a nice job and won the set," Head Coach Stephanie Radecki said. "I feel like we lost a bit of momentum. We were a little less effective offensively in the other sets.
Four Southern Miss players tallied 10 or more kills on the evening, as Wesley led the pack with 15. Five Golden Eagles recorded double digit digs in the exhibition match as well.
Following the match, Radecki had high praise for many of her athletes.
"Cara Atkinson had a great match in the middle as a freshman," Radecki said. "Kinsley Hanback does an amazing job offensively, she's a strong force at the net. I think Mia Wesley is going to be a great player for us. I believe she can play even better than she did tonight." Â
Radecki and the Eagles look to use the lessons learned in this exhibition next week during the Southern Miss Classic. The Golden Eagles open their weekend on Friday, Aug. 27 against MVSU at 3 p.m. Admission at the Wellness Center is free and fans can catch the action at CUSA.tv.
