Southern Miss Falls To LSU In Season Opener

BATON ROUGE, La. – The Southern Miss soccer team fell 2-1, against LSU on Thursday, Aug. 19 inside the LSU Soccer Stadium.
The Tigers out-shot the Golden Eagles, 22-11 overall, but the Black and Gold saw more shots on goal, 6-5. USM was led offensively by sophomore Blessing Kinglsey (Carlow, Ireland-Presentation College) who scored the Golden Eagles' only goal. Graduate Alice Campos (Campinas, Brazil-Northwestern Oklahoma State) aided Southern Miss in the attack with five shots, and two shots on goal.
Seven Golden Eagles saw the full 90 minutes of play with four coming off the bench to see action. Graduate Kendell Mindnich (Melbourne Beach, Fla.-Melbourne HS) tallied three saves between the sticks.
The Tigers opened the scoring, late in the first half to take the lead going into the break. In the 63rd minute, Blessing Kingsley leveled the score for USM tapping in a deflected shot by Alice Campos. With under six minutes left LSU notched the winner from a scrambled ball inside the box.
The Black and Gold will continue on the road as they travel to Grambling State on Sunday, Aug. 22. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at the GSU Soccer Field.
