HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Three Southern Miss men's golfers collected below par rounds over the final 18 holes Tuesday in giving the Golden Eagles a seventh-place team finish at the fourth annual Tiger Invitational in Columbia, Mo.
Brice Wilkinson fired a final-round, two-under 70 at the par 72, 7,221-yard course at The Club at Old Hawthorne, while Brian Richards and Hunter Atkins each shot a one-under 71 to lead the Golden Eagles on the final day of the tournament.
"Today was a great bounce back for our guys to finish up the event strong," said Southern Miss coach Eddie Brescher. "We were not happy with how we played over the first 36 holes and wanted to finish the event with a good overall team round. And we succeeded."
Wilkinson's strong finish allowed him to post a 10th-place tie – his first top 10 finish of the season – as he completed the event with a three-under 213 stroke total.
Richards' round of 71 provided his lowest round of the tournament, giving him a 221 total and a 33rd-place tie, while Atkins enjoyed his first under par round of the event for a 222 and a 36th-place tie. Matt Lorenz shot a 74 to end his 54-hole tournament with a 226 and a 50th-place tie, while Robbie Latter fired a 73 for a 228 total and a 55th-place tie.
The Golden Eagles enjoyed their best team score of the event with a three-under 285, also marking the second lowest round by the squad during the 2020-21 season.
Host Missouri captured the team title with a 25-under 839, followed by Kansas State (846), Illinois State (859), Wichita State and North Alabama (860), UMKC (862), Southern Miss (879), Morehead State (881), South Dakota State (883), Missouri State (885), SIUE (886), South Dakota and Bowling Green State (897) and Drake (921).
Southern Miss returns to action when they travel to Bridgeport, W.Va., to play in the WVU Mountaineer Invite.
