Southern Miss in Second Place After 36-Hole Debut in Texas

BEAUMONT, Texas -- Emily Cox leads Southern Miss with a 5-over 149 for sixth place, and the Golden Eagles as a whole are in second after Monday's two-round marathon to begin the Cardinal Challenge.
Cox netted four birdies and her first-career eagle (par-four, 365 yards on the third hole), which also marked the first for Southern Miss since Friend Chompitakdacha and Tenley Moretti did so at the season-opening Mercedes-Benz Intercollegiate in September 2019. Her 74 and 75 on the day marked her two best rounds of the season.
Merche Corbacho is right behind, tied for seventh with a pair of 75s. The highest finish of her freshman season was tying for 10th at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate.
Friend Chompitakdacha sits in a tie for 20th, which currently matches the Lake Oconee Invitational as her best position of the season. Tenley Moretti valiantly fought back with an eight-stroke improvement on the second 18 to hit the No. 42 spot.
No. 48 Sam Houston leads the pack after carding a 300 and 288, both the highest rounds of the field.
