Merche Corbacho Named C-USA's Women's Golf Freshman of the Year

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Southern Miss women's golfer Merche Corbacho was named Conference USA's Freshman of the Year on Wednesday, as announced by the league.

Corbacho appeared in all nine tournaments and produced a 75.30 stroke average, the lowest by a freshman in school history and seventh overall. This marks the program's first conference-superlative award as well.

The Castellon, Spain, native started and finished her season on a high note. She carded a 4-over 220 in her debut at the Lady Red Wolves Classic, finishing 16th. She then reached the top-10 in three of her last four tournaments, starting with a 10-over 226 to tie for 10th at the stacked Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate.

Corbacho's last two events saw her tie for sixth at the Cardinal Challenge, followed by a career and team-season-low 218 at the C-USA Championships, tying for ninth. Two of her five par-or-better rounds came in that finale, including matching a season-low, 1-under 71 to close it out.
