HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Three Southern Miss men's golfers placed in the top 10 after the opening day of the Mountaineer Invitational Monday in Bridgeport, W.Va., as the Golden Eagles also lead in the team standings.
The event, which is being played at the par 72, 7,308-yard Pete Dye Golf Club, finishes with 18 more holes Tuesday set for an 8 a.m., CT start. Each team in the tournament has utilized six players with the top four scorers in each round counting toward the team score.
"This golf course is a brutal test," said Southern Miss coach Eddie Brescher. "Our guys are fantastic ball strikers which is essential on this golf course. The rough is 7-8 inches long, so hitting fairways is very important. We did a great job of hitting fairways so we could attack the pin placements."
Junior Brice Wilkinson held the top finisher for the Golden Eagles holding second place, after firing rounds of 72 and 71 for a one-under par 143. Wilkinson played steady all day as he registered nine birdies. It was his strong showing down the stretch of each round as he collected a three-under over the final eight holes of the first round and one-under over the final eight holes of his second circuit to find himself just four strokes behind leader Mark Goetz (139) of host West Virginia.
"Our lineup is filled with depth and it shows each time we play," said Brescher. "We have yet to have the same player as the drop score on consecutive rounds. These guys fight hard and grind for each other. We are looking forward to battling it out tomorrow."
Senior Matt Lorenz added rounds of 73 and 74 for a 147 and ranks in 5th place. His 36-hole total is his lowest of the season as he looks to post his first top 10 finish of the year.
Another Golden Eagle, Brian Richards, holds a 9th-place tie after shooting rounds of 74 and 75 for a 149. Freshman Thongpipat Rattanayanon posted a 75 and a 76 for a 151 and a 16h-place tie.
Freshman Robbie Latter added rounds of 80 and 75 for a 155 and a 31st-tie, while junior Hunter Atkins rounded out the Golden Eagle scorers with a pair of 80s for a 160 and a 54th-place tie.
Southern Miss posted rounds of 294 and 295 for a 589 stroke total and leads host WVU (592) by three strokes. Chattanooga (601) ranks third, following Georgia Southern and Loyola Maryland (603), UCONN (607), Appalachian State (611), George Mason (613), Marshall (614), Xavier (618), George Washington (626), WKU (632) and Robert Morris (639).
