HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Southern Miss women's tennis sophomore Sarah Medik was named Conference USA's Female Athlete of the Week following her 4-0 performance in the Golden Eagles' weekend sweep.
Medik, a member of the league's All-Freshman team last year, powered her team to 4-2 and 5-2 wins over UAB and Louisiana Tech, respectively. Against the Blazers, she won 6-2, 6-0 in singles as well as 6-3 in doubles while defeating her LA Tech foe 6-0, 6-3 and 6-4 in doubles (both alongside Ebru Zeynep Yazgan). Yazgan is also the last Golden Eagle to earn weekly honors, doing so on March 11 last season before the COVID-19 shutdown.
Southern Miss (7-2) has four-straight wins and three in a row for C-USA play, its most in any season since 2013. The Golden Eagles have also won 22-straight at home and are 18-3 overall the last two seasons. Medik, a native of Dornbirn, Austria, is 5-3 in singles, including a victory over South Alabama's Yu Fujioka, a former Sun Belt Player of the Year.
The Golden Eagles' Wednesday match against Nicholls was postponed due to weather, and they will return to action Saturday at 11 a.m. against Loyola.
