HATTIESBURG, Miss. – A strong second round by the Southern Miss men's golf team propelled them into eighth place after the first 36 holes of the Grand Canyon University Invitational played at the GCU Championship Golf Course Monday in Phoenix, Ariz.
The team shot a two-over 286 score at the par-71, 7,176-yard setup over the opening day as Brian Richards and Matt Lorenz each fired an even-par 71 over the final circuit, with Hunter Atkins and Robbie Latter adding a one-over 72, while Brice Wilkinson posted a two-over 73.
"Our guys got off to a slow start in round one," said Southern Miss coach Eddie Brescher. "The wind was not a factor but the temperature was low which affected advantage of distance. Cold temps left us with longer approach distances, making it difficult to hit greens and get the ball in close. However, we did a great job finishing strong in both rounds.
"The second round saw us start and finish hot. The middle part of the afternoon we made a ton of mistakes. We are a team that makes plenty of birdies. Tomorrow, if we eliminate the simple bogies we are making, we will be able to make a charge for the leaders."
The Golden Eagles, which also shot a 291 in the opening round, finished with a 577 total just 10 strokes out of the lead behind leader and host GCU, which registered an even par 568 in the 16-team field.
Atkins posted the lowest round for Southern Miss on the opening day with a first-round 70 to give him an even-par 142 total to place him in a 14th-place tie. Lorenz opened his day with a 74 to end with a 145, finding himself in a 33rd-place tie.
Both Latter and Wilkinson collected 146 total scores over two rounds, with them shooting a 74 and 73, respectively, to each hold a 40th-place tie.
Brian Richards posted an 81 first-round score to end his day with a 152 for an 82nd-place tie.
After the opening day, Eastern Michigan is in second place (569) followed by Wichita State (572), North Dakota State (573), Cal-State Fullerton and Pacific (574), Cal-State Northridge (575), Southern Miss, Omaha (580), Sacramento State (581), Dixie State and UTRGV (582), Creighton (584), California Baptist (586), Drake (587) and South Dakota (588).
The final 18 holes take place on Tuesday with a 9:45 a.m. PT shotgun start. Fans can follow the live scoring here.
