Southern Miss Splits Saturday Doubleheader with Jacksonville State

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss Golden Eagles (10-3) split Saturday's doubleheader against Jacksonville State (1-7) in Jacksonville, Alabama. The Golden Eagles secured the win in game one outscoring the Gamecocks 8-2. In game two Southern Miss fell to Jacksonville State 3-0.
Game One
In game one Southern Miss jumped out early scoring the contest's first two runs off of a double hit by Karley Nichols. By the end of the second inning the Golden Eagles lead the contest 3-0. The Golden Eagle offense would remain hot for the remainder of the game seeing a home run from Karsen Pierce and scoring eight runs by the seventh inning.
The Golden Eagles' defense was led by junior pitcher Kaylan Ladner. Ladner in her last performance set a new Southern Miss Softball Complex record. Kiln, Mississippi native picked up exactly where she left off pounding the strike zone and making hitters miss.
The contest saw four stolen bases by senior Destini Brown who scored two of the Golden Eagles' eight runs.
The game was finalized after seven innings of play resulting in an 8-2 Southern Miss victory.
Game Two
In game two the Gamecocks struck early scoring three runs by the end of the second inning. Junior Makenna Pierce settled in from the circle and prevented Jacksonville State from scoring throughout the remainder of the competition.
Southern Miss was unable to bring any runners across home plate and dropped the contest to Jacksonville State 3-0.
Southern Miss will be back in action Sunday, February 28 at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. (CT) in a doubleheader versus Houston Baptist.
