HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss senior right-handed pitcher Hunter Stanley (Hammond, La.) opened the 2021 Golden Eagle season with a gem of a performance. As a result, he was selected Conference USA Pitcher of the Week in a release by the league office Tuesday morning after opening the 2021 campaign with a gem of a performance.
In his first career start, after 37 career relief appearances over the two previous seasons, Stanley allowed just one hit and no runs over six innings of work and fanned 13 while walking one.
The strikeout total marked a career-high for Stanley and that number also was the most as a Golden Eagle on opening day in the Scott Berry era (since 2010). That total also equaled the most strikeouts since Nick Sandlin posted 13 against Rice on March 30, 2018.
Stanley whiffed the first five batters he faced and registered three strikeouts in an inning three times. He allowed just two base runners – a second-inning double and a four-inning walk. He finished his outing by fanning six of his final seven.
This award is the first for Stanley and the eighth time a Golden Eagles has been awarded this honors since the start of the 2018 season.
The Golden Eagles (2-1) return to action Tuesday night when they travel to South Alabama for a 6:30 p.m. contest at Eddie Stanky Field. The game can be heard on one of the affiliates of the Southern Miss Sports Network as well as Southern Miss Game Day app.
