
Southern Miss Women Capture First Conference USA Indoor Title in School History

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The podium at the Birmingham CrossPlex belonged to the women of Southern Miss Sunday evening as the Golden Eagles were crowned champions of Conference USA at the C-USA Indoor Championships in Birmingham, Ala.
"Our team has incredible heart," Southern Miss track and field coach Jon Stuart said of the team's victory. "We had inspirational performances all weekend. Kate Mattox makes the mile final with only one shoe. Vivette Green shocked the field with a 200m win. Cassidy Teuscher wins Freshman of the Meet in only her second indoor competition of the season. We simply caught fire during the first event and were unstoppable all day until they gave us the trophy."
In total, the women made eight trips to the podium with Vivette Green taking gold in the 200m dash, four different second place finishes and three bronze medal winners.
Green ran a personal-best 24.21 to capture the event title, while teammate Trinity Benson joined her on the podium with a third-place finish and personal-best of 24.46.
After breaking the school record in the 5000m on Saturday, Teuscher nearly broke the 3000m record, shaving 11 seconds off her previous personal-best to finish second in the event with a time of 9:40.02. The freshman earned 16 points and was the top point-finisher for the Golden Eagles.
Finishing in sixth place with just one shoe in Friday's prelims, Kate Mattox finished with a time of 5:01.96 in the finals on Sunday to take third place, while Sarah Parnell was right behind Mattox in fourth with a personal-best 5:03.03 for the freshman.
Jasmine Griffin and Marquasha Myers added to the Golden Eagle point total with a sixth and eighth place finish in the 60m hurdle.
The personal-bests would continue in the 60m as Octavia Cato went 7.54 for a second-place finish. Green and Trinity Benson finished fourth and fifth, as the Black and Gold picked up 17 points in the event.
Savannah McMillon kept things rolling for the ladies as she earned two points with a sixth-place finish in the 800m.
Myers and Ashlee Osaji both picked up personal-bests in the triple as the pair finished fourth and sixth in the event.
The 4x400 team of Benson, Osaji, Griffin and Green capped the run to the title with a fifth-place finish in 3:55.48.
Overall, the women finished with 109 points over the two days to beat Charlotte, who finished second with 105 points.
On the men's side, Trey Johnson took home the 400m title with a time of 47.68, as the men finished 6th overall. The 4x400 team consisting of Landon Chalden, Johnson, Kacey Spinks and DJ Butler also found the podium with a third-place finish in 3:18.41 on Sunday.
