HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss Women's Soccer season begins Wednesday at 2 p.m. CT when the Golden Eagle soccer team heads to Thibodaux, La to take on Nicholls.
This begins the program's eighth year under the direction of head coach Mohammed El-Zare. The staff also features assistant coaches J.P. Valadares And Carly Mauldin. Nine seniors will look to provide leadership on this year's squad, including 2021 Pre-Season All-Conference USA First-Team defender Caitlin Pierce.
"We are grateful to be able to play this season," El-Zare said. "After eleven months of waiting we are excited to see the outcome of our hard work and persistence. As a team, we will put our best foot forward playing to win and ultimately having fun. We are enthusiastic about the opportunity to play the game we love and seize the moment."
Southern Miss kicks off at home Feb. 9. at 2 p.m. CT against West Florida in an exhibition match.
Offense
The Golden Eagles, in their previous season, scored 28 goals averaging 1.56 goals per game. Last season's leading scorers Hailey Pohevitz and Ariel Diaz look to continue their offensive dominance and seek to lead the team to a successful 2021 campaign. The two return this season as seniors and will perform in leadership roles.
Alice Campos, a Junior from Campinas, Brazil, also scored four goals in the 2019 season.
Defense
Kendell Mindnich will be returning as a veteran goalkeeper this season. Mindnich protected the Southern Miss' net last season with 64 saves. Her previous experience in the Pac-12 gives her a competitive edge and readies her for the upcoming competition.
Caitlin Pierce, already well-known around C-USA for her defensive dexterity, will continue to be a defensive weapon with her strength to win the ball of forwards and her speed to win the 50/50 balls both in the air and played behind the defense.
The Golden Eagles return many players from last season's squad in addition to yet another talented group of freshmen.
