HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Southern Miss will look to up its win streak Tuesday when it hosts Nicholls in its final non-conference volleyball match. First serve is set for 5 p.m., and while it is a closed match to the general public, free streaming is available on CUSA.tv.
Southern Miss (4-2) split with Southeastern Louisiana Friday in its most-recent action, with the nightcap featuring three-straight sets after a 2-0 deficit, a first for the Golden Eagles since defeating No. 1 WKU in the 2018 C-USA Quarterfinals. This will be the Golden Eagles' seventh-straight contest at home dating back to its lone fall weekend, and after this, they will play at UTEP Sunday and Monday.
Kenzie Smith took on setter duties for each match, logging career-highs of 49 assists and five block assists in the win. Duquesne Moratzka has registered double-digit kills in five of six matches this year and is averaging 4.22 kills per set. Kinsley Hanback (.323) and Nyanuer Bidit (.304) have also brought the thunder on the offensive end.
Defensively, those three also have the highest block numbers on the team, led by Bidit's 22 overall. Madison Lawler has continued her defensive dominance with 4.57 kills per set.
The Colonels' suspension of team activities expired Sunday, and this will be their opener. Their original schedule was set to begin last Thursday at Southern Miss, followed by a Saturday doubleheader against Xavier (La.). Nicholls was picked 10th in the Southland preseason poll and is led by Preseason All-Conference selection Emily Gauthreaux, the team's top attacker last year (2.96 kills/set and a .217 hitting percentage).Â
Southern Miss has won 18-straight matches (all in three or four sets) against Nicholls since the 1995 season, leading the all-time series 35-14.
