Get to Know: Asjha Leake

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss women's basketball is set to open their 2021-22 season tomorrow against the William Carey Crusaders on Nov. 9 at Reed Green Coliseum. Before head coach Joye Lee-McNelis embarks on her 18th season at the helm, we'll introduce the six newest Lady Eagles to join the program. Next up, is freshman Asjha Leake from Cibolo, Texas
Q: Why did you choose to play basketball at Southern Miss?
Leake: It just felt like home when I stepped foot on campus.
Q: If you were stranded on a deserted island, what three teammates would you bring with you?
Leake: Lauren because I can always count on here to come to my rescue. Melyia because she's the same as Lauren. Daishai because she'll make situation fun and save us.
Q: If you could have any superpower what would it be?
Leake: Invisibility. I can listen to people's conversations.
Q: What is your intended major and what do you plan to do with it?
Leake: I'm majoring in Kinesiology with plans to go to physical therapy school after Southern Miss.
Q: Do you have any pets?
Leake: I have a black lab named Biggie.
Q: Who is a professional player you admire?
Leake: Candace Parker because she is a positive legend of the game and I love the way she plays.
Q: What is an interesting fact about yourself that Southern Miss fans should know?
Leake: I lived in Japan for five years.
Q: Who has been the biggest influence on your basketball career?
Leake: My parents. If they didn't encourage me, I wouldn't even play basketball.
Q: As a newcomer, in what ways do you believe you can make an immediate impact on the team this year?
Leake: By encouraging my teammates each day.
Q: Did you play any other sports growing up?
Leake: I played softball and volleyball up until high school when I focused on just basketball.
Q: What is the best vacation you've been on?
Leake: Hawai'i because it was the first vacation I ever went on when I was young and I loved it.
Q: If you could give a message to Southern Miss fans what would it be?
Leake: Keep showing up and supporting us. To The Top!
