HUNTSVILLE, Ala. -- The Southern Miss beach volleyball program traveled to Huntsville, Ala. to participate in an exhibition fall tournament on Nov. 6. The Golden Eagles faced off against five collegiate beach volleyball programs at the Collegiate Beach Bash, hosted by Rally Volleyball.
Eight duos from Southern Miss battled against teams from LSU, Tulane and Chattanooga, along with Conference USA foes, Georgia State and UAB. Each pair of Golden Eagles took part in three matches against foes from other programs.
Olivia Hepworth, one of Southern Miss' seniors, spoke about how important the fall slate of exhibition matches has been for the Golden Eagles. This is the first time in program history that Southern Miss has been able to compete in the fall in preparation for the spring season.
"It was a great day that displayed so much growth in the program," Hepworth said. "The season has not started yet and we were able to identify areas that we will continue to focus and improve on."
Head coach Shawn Taylor has been able to use the fall season to improve and prepare for the inaugural Conference USA beach volleyball season. Huntsville will also host the first annual C-USA Championships in April of 2022.
"The city of Huntsville has really invested in the growth of beach volleyball," said Taylor. "We're appreciative of their hospitality and we know we'll be back here in about six months. We know we need to put in the work between now and then to improve.
Southern Miss heads to New Orleans, La. for one final fall tournament on Nov. 21. The exhibition showcase, hosted by the Tulane Green Wave will serve as the Golden Eagles' final tune up before the spring schedule begins in February.Â
"Today was a great opportunity to evaluate where we are at," Taylor said. "We'll set a course for where we need to be for the first ever Conference USA Beach Volleyball Championships in April."
