MISSOULA, Mont. --Â The Southern Miss men's basketball team dropped its final game at the Zootown Classic on Friday night against Montana, 74-62. Tyler Stevenson posted 21 points and 11 rebounds to notch his third double-double in his last four games.
"I was very proud of our team, but I think we got out of sorts there towards the end," head coach Jay Ladner said. "You have to give Montana credit. They are a well-coached team, and I was impressed with the way they played in front of that crowd."
The Golden Eagles stormed back from an early deficit in the first half to take a 33-29 lead into the locker room at the half. Ladner's squad trailed for 13:25 in the opening 20 minutes after taking their first lead of the game on a Stevenson jumper with 6:29 on the clock. The Grizzlies answered back to take a five-point lead less than five minutes later. Stevenson punched back again with a layup off a Walyn Napper assist. A pair of DeAndre Pinckney free throws and a Napper jumper gave the Golden Eagles that five-point lead at the half.
Stevenson shot 5-of-8 from the field in the opening frame and hauled in seven rebounds. Junior Isaih Moore added 10 points to join his fellow forward in double figures halfway through the contest. Napper dished out four assists in the half. Southern Miss hit just one three-pointer in the first half while Montana went 5-of-14 from three-point land.
Backed by a rowdy crowd, the Grizzlies took the lead 3:13 into the second half on a jumper. The Golden Eagles answered back with a Moore turnaround jumper and a Pinckney three-pointer to pull back ahead by four points. Unfortunately, that was the largest lead Southern Miss would hold for the rest of the game. Montana went on a 7-0 run to flip the score and take a seven-point lead with just over eight minutes to play. The Golden Eagles missed six free throws down the stretch and the Grizzles capitalized to take a 12-point lead with 47 seconds to play. Montana shot 52.2 percent from the floor in the second half and out-scored Southern Miss, 45-29. The Golden Eagles went 11-of-31 from the field in the second half to shoot 35.5 percent.
Pinckney finished with 12 points and eight rebounds in 20 minutes of playing time. Two nights after scoring 29 points, freshman Rashad Bolden knocked down three shots to finish with seven points. Moore finished with 17 points, four rebounds, and one block.Â
Stevenson and Moore were named to the Zootown Classic All-Tournament Team.
