
Football Opens Two-Game Road Swing at Nationally Ranked UTSA

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss football team takes to the road for the first of two-straight contests when they travel to San Antonio this weekend to play No. 15 UTSA in a Conference USA West Division affair. Game time is set for 2:30 p.m., at the Alamodome.
The game will be streamed through ESPN+ and can also be heard on one of the affiliates of the Southern Miss Sports Network by Learfield.
UTSA, which holds a 9-0 record overall and are 5-0 in C-USA play, marks the second nationally ranked opponent for the Golden Eagles this season, after playing No. 1 Alabama back in September.
Southern Miss (1-8, 0-5) looks to snap a seven-game losing streak in the eighth meeting between them and Roadrunners. UTSA snapped a three-game losing streak to Southern Miss last season with a 23-20 victory at The Rock, but Southern Miss holds the overall series lead 4-3.
Defensive back Malik Shorts continues to lead the Golden Eagle defense after posting his fourth double-digit tackle performance last weekend at home against North Texas with 13 stops. Shorts paces the squad this season in tackles with 76 and also ranks first on the squad for both interceptions (two) and pass breakups (seven).
As a unit, the Nasty Bunch defense ranks No. 58 in the country in total defense (367.8), including No. 44 in opponent's passing yards per game (209.4). The Golden Eagle defense produced their second touchdown of the year when Jay Stanley returned a North Texas interception 55 yards the score.
On offensive, Frank Gore, Jr., leads the team running the football with 608 yards and a 4.3 yards per carry average. With his 155 receiving yards as well, Gore, Jr., also ranks first in all-purpose yards with 763 (84.8 yards per game).
Jason Brownlee continues to leads the receiving corps in catches (33), receiving yards (427) and touchdown catches (4)., while quarterback Jake Lange is expected to earn his fifth start of the year. He has thrown for 843 yards on 79-of-137 attempts with five touchdowns and six interceptions.
Following the UTSA contest, the Golden Eagles return to the road for a Friday, Nov. 19, game at long-time rival Louisiana Tech. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
