Golden Eagles Fall to Mean Green in Four Sets

DENTON, Texas. -- Despite a strong start in the opening frame, Southern Miss fell to the North Texas Mean Green in four sets. The Golden Eagles fall to 10-10 and 2-4 in Conference USA competition.

The Golden Eagles featured six athletes who recorded five or more kills in the four-set match. Mia Wesley led Southern Miss with 15 kills, while Kinsley Hanback tallied 11 kills with a hitting percentage of .348.

Kenzie Smith contributed in every facet of the game, with 33 assists, 18 digs, five kills and four blocks. As a unit, the Golden Eagle backcourt recorded 63 digs.

Set One, Southern Miss 25, North Texas 20: Southern Miss opened the match strong, winning the first set by a score of 25-20. The Golden Eagles hit at a .344 clip, while holding North Texas to a hitting percentage of .152.

Six Golden Eagles combined for 13 kills, as Wesley led the way with four. Smith recorded six digs and five assists in the opening frame.

Set Two, Southern Miss 23, North Texas 25: The Golden Eagles and Mean Green battled in a close second set, with North Texas emerging victorious to tie the match at 1-1. Hanback added six kills for her team, while Wesley recorded five with a hitting percentage of .625.

Chloe Klusman and Smith recorded two blocks in the second set, while the Southern Miss defense tallied 23 digs.

Set Three, Southern Miss 19, North Texas 25: Southern Miss fell behind early in the third set and was unable to recover, as UNT took a 2-1 lead. Lauren Talbert posted four kills on six total attempts, while Klusman added three with a hitting percentage of .750.

Set Four, Southern Miss 19, North Texas 25: While the Golden Eagles matched North Texas' offensive output, Southern Miss fell in four sets to the Mean Green following a 25-19 set loss.
