Southern Miss Drops Conference Match against UTEP

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss volleyball team (10-11, 2-5 C-USA) fell to the UTEP Miners in four sets on Friday night.Â
Mia Wesley recorded 25 kills, a season-high for any Golden Eagle in 2021, with a hitting percentage of .333. Lauren Talbert picked up 11 kills and 11 digs, while Kenzie Smith distributed 43 assists and recorded 10 digs for Southern Miss.
Set One, Southern Miss 20, UTEP 25: Southern Miss struggled in the opening moments of the first set and was unable to recover, dropping the frame by a score of 25-20. The Golden Eagles recorded 10 kills and 13 digs as a unit to start the match.
Wesley led the way for her squad, posting seven kills, while Smith dished out assists on every Southern Miss kill.
Set Two, Southern Miss 22, UTEP 25: Southern Miss was unable to contain UTEP's offense, falling in the second set, 25-22. The Miners hit at a .394 clip with 15 kills to take a 2-0 lead on the Golden Eagles.Â
Wesley again led the way offensively, racking up six of Southern Miss' 13 kills in the set. Lauren Talbert and Cara Atkinson both recorded three kills, while Smith distributed 11 assists in the set. The Golden Eagle backcourt tallied 14 digs.
Set Three, Southern Miss 25, UTEP 23: The Golden Eagles dug deep in the third frame, as they avoided the sweep with an impressive 25-23 set victory. Southern Miss racked up 15 kills and 16 digs as a unit to overcome the Miners in a critical set.
The offense was propelled by Wesley's performance, as she recorded eight kills with a hitting percentage of .467. Smith was once again efficient, with 13 assists and four digs to aid her team to the fourth set.
Set Four, Southern Miss 16, UTEP 25: Southern Miss fell in the fourth and final set by a score of 25-16. The Golden Eagles were unable to generate enough offense to extend the match. Wesley recorded four kills on nine attempts, increasing her match total to 25, the most of any Golden Eagles in a single match this season.
