Golden Eagles Have Strong Showing at ITA Southern Regional

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- The Golden Eagles wrapped up a successful trip to Tuscaloosa, Ala. at the ITA Southern Regional, which took place from Oct. 14-16. Four athletes from Southern Miss participated in singles and doubles competition at the event.
Ebru Zeynep Yazgan opened her tournament with a victory over Dorota Szczygielska of Northwestern State in the first leg of the qualifying round. She defeated Szczygielska by scores of 6-3 and 6-0 to advance to the round of 32.
Clara Tardival also advanced to the qualifying round of 32 with a win over Giovanna Pereira of Louisiana Monroe (7-5, 6-4). She finished her singles slate with a close match against Brooke Theis of Tulane, which she lost in three sets (2-6, 7-5, 10-2).
In the second round of qualifiers, Yazgan defeated Oleksandra Balaba of ULM (6-2, 6-4) to move on to the round of 16. She defeated Lindsay Song of Samford in three hard fought sets to join Sarah Medik in the main draw of the regional. Yazgan finished her tournament with a 3-1 record in singles competition.
The pair of Monique Burton and Medik finished their tournament with two wins and a loss in doubles competition. They first won their match against Ally Hayduk and Lindsey Song of Samford before picking up an 8-5 victory over Kasia and Ola Pitak of Alabama in the round of 32. Yazgan and Tardival fell in the second round of doubles competition following a bye in the round of 64.
The Golden Eagles finished their time in Tuscaloosa with a combined singles record of 4-3 and a doubles mark of 2-2 against high-level Division I competition.
Next Up:
Southern Miss is set to participate in the Battle on the Bayou Invitational in New Orleans, La. on Nov. 5-6. The tournament, hosted by the University of New Orleans, will be the last fall competition for the Golden Eagles.
