HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss football team returns home this weekend to renew one of the longest rivalries in the history of Conference USA when they welcome UAB to M.M. Roberts Stadium, Saturday, for a 2:30 p.m. contest.
The game will be aired locally through Stadium on channel WHPM 23.2 (Antenna 23) or on Comcast channel 219, as well as streamed through watchstadium.com. The contest can also be heard on one of the affiliates of the Southern Miss Sports Network by Learfield along with channel 990 on the SiriusXM app.
The two teams meet for the 19th time since the two schools began playing each other in 2000 with Southern Miss holding an overall 11-7 series lead. The game last season was not played due to COVID-19 and there was no games during the 2015 and 2016 campaigns following that school's decision to drop their program those two seasons.
Southern Miss won the first nine meetings between the schools, while UAB has captured seven of the last nine contests. The Golden Eagles, though, won the last meeting, 37-2, in Hattiesburg in 2019.
Freshman Jake Lange is expected to make his second start at quarterback for the home squad. In his first two appearances, Lange has thrown 543 yards on 43-of-68 throws with three touchdowns passes. Running back Frank Gore, Jr., continues to pace the Golden Eagle ground attack with 403 yards and a 4.2 per carry average, while Jason Brownlee leads the receiving corps with 19 catches for 240 yards and a pair of scoring grabs.
On defense, Malik Shorts continues to lead Southern Miss in tackles with 45. His two interceptions, along with his six pass breakups, are also team highs this season. Jay Stanley in next in tackles on the team with 31, while Hayes Maples is third with 25. Defensive lineman Josh Ratcliff leads that position group with 21 tackles, including 4.5 for loss.
Saturday's game marks the first afternoon contest for the Golden Eagles this fall.
Following the UAB contest, the Golden Eagles will enjoy a bye week before returning to action on the road to face Middle Tennessee, Saturday, Oct., 30, at 2:30 p.m.
Tickets still remain for the 2021 C-USA home schedule and can be purchased by going online at SouthernMissTickets.com, by calling 1-800-844-TICK (8425) or 601-266-5418, as well as emailing ticket.office@usm.edu.
