RUSTON, La. – Southern Miss was able to get within three early in the third quarter, but an 11-0 run from Louisiana Tech ultimately sealed a 77-60 victory for the Lady Techsters at Thomas Assembly Center on Friday night.
"We did not play well," head coach Joye Lee-McNelis said. "From the tip, it was a battle for us. They went to the 2-3 zone in the third quarter and we just really struggled to score against it. We have to be able to get more from our veteran players."
Southern Miss got 38 points from their bench, including 12 from Melyia Grayson, who was the only Lady Eagle in double figures. Starters Daishai Almond and Allie Kennedy each added eight apiece for the Black and Gold.
The Lady Techsters (5-6, 3-6 C-USA) were led by Brianna Harris and Raizel Guinto who each had 19 points in the win. Keiunna Walker and Lotte Sant were also in double figures for Tech.
Southern Miss (5-6, 3-6 C-USA) was forced into 19 turnovers by LA Tech, which the Lady Techsters converted into 22 points.
After a back-and-forth opening 10 minutes that saw Tech jump out to a slight 20-17 lead, the Lady Techsters shared the ball well, collecting assists on 7-of-8 made field goals in the second quarter. Amber Dixon picked up five of her career-high 11 assists in the frame to push the LA Tech advantage to seven going into the half.
A quick personal 4-0 run by Kahia Warmsley helped cut the lead down to three out of the break, but the Lady Eagles would not get any closer as the aforementioned 11-0 run from Tech helped seal the win.
Southern Miss and LA Tech will complete their series on Saturday at Reed Green Coliseum. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. CT.
