MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Southern Miss gave the ball away 20 times as turnovers played a factor in the Lady Eagles falling 58-78 Friday night at the Murphy Center against Middle Tennessee.
"We've got to continue to work," head coach Joye Lee-McNelis said. "It has to come down to some solid leadership from our veterans. It has to happen from there."
Southern Miss moved the ball with ease against the Lady Raider defense to open the game dishing out assists on 6-of-7 FGs, with six different Lady Eagles collection an assist in the quarter. Melyia Grayson came out on fire hitting all four shots she took, while going 3-of-4 from the foul line. The Hattiesburg, Miss. native also had a career-high three blocks in the first frame alone.
Turnovers plagued the Black and Gold in the second as they handed the ball to Middle six times, which the Lady Raiders used to help extend their lead by eight and go into the locker room up 41-29.
Coming out of the break, Southern Miss was able to cut the Lady Raiders lead down to five off of the sharpshooting of Allie Kennedy, who knocked down a pair of 3's in the first four minutes of the quarter. Middle Tennessee ended the frame on a 14-5 run to extend their lead out to 14 going into the final 10 minutes of play.
The Lady Eagles fed the ball inside in the fourth quarter, scoring 10 of their 12 points in the paint, but it wasn't enough as Middle would go on to capture the win.
Grayson was the only Southern Miss player to reach double figures, finishing with 16 points on a perfect 6-of-6 night from the field.
Anastasia Hayes, the leading scorer in the country, led Middle with 26 points. Joining her in double figures were Deja Cage with 15 and Aislynn Hayes with 10 points.
Southern Miss and Middle Tennessee will conclude their series tomorrow at 4 p.m. CT from the Murphy Center.
