Southern Miss’ women fell to the Herd in the first round of the C-USA Championships on Wednesday.
FRISCO, Texas – The Lady Eagles of Southern Miss women's basketball fell in overtime to Marshall in the first round of the Conference USA Championships on Wednesday, 71-67.
Southern Miss (15-15) had two put up double-doubles against Marshall (13-17), but in the end they fell just short in a heartbreaker in the Ford Center at the Star.
The Lady Eagles started out the contest winning the tip, and saw Kelsey Jones make the first basket of the game as well. At the 4:28 mark of the first, Shonte Hailes hit her second of two back-to-back three-pointers. Respect Leaphart was fouled from the three-point line with 3:45 in the first, and hit all three of her shots. The Lady Eagles finished the first frame up by one, 15-14. The second quarter really began after a good assist from Daishai Almond to Leaphart for a good bucket in the seventh minute. It stayed close in the last five minutes of the quarter, keeping within arm's reach of each other. The Lady Eagles had a good two-footer from Almond to make it 21-24, then Liz Gibbs was fouled and went to the line where she'd collect both, bringing them within one with just over 3:30 to go. Leaphart was fouled and made both her shots, and then was followed up by a Kelsey Jones put-in to tie it up at 27-all with 1:20 on the clock. Leaphart had two more free throws and it seemed the Lady Eagles would lead going into the break, but Marshall's Brooks would hit a good three as the clock wound down to put them up by one. Leaphart would have already collected 11 points as the Lady Eagles trailed 30-29 at the half.
The third quarter saw a roaring start from the Lady Eagles. Daishai Almond recorded a three-point play followed by a Leaphart layup and a layup from Alarie Mayze. With those three in a row and 8:14 left in the third, the Herd called timeout. The Feisty Bunch defense would really put in work in the second half, as enough pressure was being put on the Marshall offense to force turnovers. With just under 5:20 to go in the third frame, a technical foul was assessed to Marshall's bench, and it seemed to give the Lady Eagles a confidence boost. The Lady Eagles would go into the media timeout with 4:30 left up by 10 at 45-35. Another team turnover would be forced from Marshall due to a shot clock violation, and Southern Miss would keep pushing. Liz Gibbs drew a foul and scored two, then Jones followed with a jumper. Going into the fourth, the Lady Eagles were up by nine at 49-40.
Almond would get the scoring rolling in the fourth with a good layup, and Alarie Mayze would take a charge under the basket. Leaphart had a put-back, increasing the lead to 11 at 55-44 with eight minutes to play. The Herd came thundering back with an 11-0 run to tie it up, with the tying point coming from Kristen Mayo who collected on a pair of free throws. Jones would end that run with a layup, but the Herd came right back with a two-pointer to be ahead by one. Lady Eagles would call a timeout with one minute left, watch a Jones bucket fall, and then have four back-to-back fouls from Marshall to put them in the bonus with 11 seconds remaining in regulation. Allie Kennedy took two shots, and one would fall, making it 60-58 with 10 seconds left. Marshall calls a full timeout and adds their last 30-second break, and coming out of it, Mayo is fouled by the Lady Eagles and reels in both, tying it up once again. Seven seconds on the clock, and Jones would shoot blindly as a defender got after her, and the buzzer would sound. It would be free basketball for the Court A matchup in the Star; the first overtime game of the season.
Southern Miss started overtime with the ball as Kelsey Jones won the tip. Marshall would start the OT scoring with a good 3-ball, and then Wheeler is fouled and makes one of her two. Almond would go to the line as well and take in two of her own, making it 62-64 Marshall. Shonte Hailes hit her third 3-pointer with 2:44 left in overtime, again putting the Lady Eagles up by one. The Herd goes up by one, then Jones makes a layup with 2:13 left, but an offensive foul is called on her and declared no basket. Marshall's Mayo would draw back-to-back Lady Eagle fouls, missing her first pair but sinking the next, now with just 1:44 to go. It was a lead they wouldn't give up at 67-65, as five more points would come from the charity stripe. Hailes would put up a jumper in the middle of the free throws, but the Lady Eagles couldn't overcome.
