HATTIESBURG, Miss. --Â In front of a large Golden Eagle crowd basking in the sun at the Southern Miss Beach Volleyball Complex, the Southern Miss Beach Volleyball (0-2, 0-0 CCSA) program put up two quality fights in its season-opening doubleheader against New Orleans (2-0, 0-0 Southland) on Saturday. The Privateers were able to come away with a pair of 3-2 wins over the Golden Eagles.Â
Kellie Garraway and Kinsley Hanback dominated in their first outing, winning 21-10, 21-18. That win marked the first by a Southern Miss duo this season. After Kylie Grandy and Abbey Wilson fell in straight sets at the top pairing, Hallie Phelan and Haley Hop won in straight sets to put the match in the hands of Madison Lawler and Piper Matsumoto on court two. The two juniors won the first set against Ally Carr and Victoria Corcoran but fell in the second set after mounting a late rally. After the Privateers forced the third set, they held on for a 15-11 season-opening win.Â
Kellie Garraway and Kinsley Hanback put the Golden Eagles ahead early in the second contest, coming from behind to win in three sets against Chloe Hampton and Hannah Volpi. The sophomore tandem fell behind in the first set before responding with a 22-20 second-set win and a 15-8 third-set win. Breleigh Favre and Olivia Hepworth fell for the second time against Brianna Vega and Alexa Spartz, however this time it took the Privateers' fourth pairing three sets. Favre and Hepworth dropped a 22-24, 21-14, 15-12 decision.Â
All squared at one after the first flight for the second time, UNO quickly swept the Golden Eagles' first and second pairings to secure its second win of the day. Hop and Phelan managed to make it a one-point match after sweeping UNO's third pair for the second consecutive match
Garraway and Hanback join Hop and Phelan as the only Golden Eagle pairs to go undefeated on opening day.Â
The Golden Eagles will have a chance to bounce back when they host ULM on Monday for a 1 p.m. match at the Southern Miss Beach Volleyball Complex.Â
