HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss men's golf team ties a school record for low round (272) and establishes another with a low 36-hole team score (560), Monday, to hold first place at the LaTour Intercollegiate in Mathews, La.
The Golden Eagles find themselves a stroke ahead of both Jacksonville State and Abilene Christian, which shot a 561 over the first 36 at the par 72, 7,010-yard LaTour Golf Course.
"What a fantastic day of golf," said Southern Miss men's golf coach Eddie Brescher. "I'm very proud of the way our guys took advantage of these scoring conditions. We have been working our guys hard on scoring inside of 150 yards and the work is starting to pay off. Anytime you have four guys under par, you know it's going to be a special day."
The Golden Eagles put together a 272 over the first circuit and added a 278 over the final 18 holes for a 26-under-par total, as all five Golden Eagles shot under par, as did their lone individual who was not part of the team scoring.
Freshman Robbie Latter (Mississauga, Ontario) paced the Golden Eagles with a 10-under 134 total, after compiling two rounds of 67 to end the opening day in a three-way tie for first in the individual standings. He led the 68-player field with 15 birdies on the day.
Junior Brice Wilkinson (Madison, Miss.), senior Walker Kesterson (Hartsburg, Mo.) and senior Matt Lorenz (Fairhope, Ala.) all hold a tie for 12th with a 139 two-round total. Wilkinson posted a 68 and a 71, while Kesterson tallied a 70 and 69, and Lorenz registered a 67 and a 72.
Sophomore Joey Kirkland (West Monroe, La.) collected scores of 72 and 71 for a 143 and a 33rd-place tie. Brian Richards, a junior from Gulf Breeze, Fla., fired rounds of 67 and 71 to tie for 9th-place as the team's lone individual.
Host Nicholls State (556) ranks fourth, followed by McNeese State (557), Central Arkansas (558), Stephen F. Austin (565), Southeastern Louisiana (571), Incarnate Word (576), Troy (578), Houston Baptist (582) and New Orleans (588).
"Hats off to the other teams as well," said Brescher. "They played some great golf as well. We feel comfortable with our position heading into the final round and are looking forward to put up a fight for the win."
The final 18 holes takes place Tuesday starting at 8 a.m., with a shotgun start. Fan can follow the action here.
