HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Southern Miss Women's Golf is ready for its closest tournament of the season, the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate in New Orleans, where it will compete from Sunday-Tuesday.
The action will take place at the English Turn Golf and Country Club, a par-73, 6,336-yard course located in the New Aurora section of the city. Live scoring is available via Golfstat.com.
The challenging field consists of Colorado State, No. 39 Denver, No. 10 Florida, No. 27 Houston, No. 28 Miami, No. 99 Iowa, No. 18 Michigan State, No. 62 NC State, No. 65 North Texas, SMU, South Alabama, No. 93 Tulsa, No. 91 Tulane (host) and UAB.
Southern Miss will be represented by Friend Chompitakdacha, Valeria Pichardo, Maria Toledo Bailey, Tenley Moretti and Ashlie Hobbs. Julie Baker will also participate as an individual.
Hobbs' appearance marks the second-straight tournament a new Golden Eagle has made her debut. Bailey, the other freshman, finished in a tie for 31st at last week's Texas State Invitational (17-over 233).
Chompitakdacha has been the team's top performer in all five tournaments so far, boasting a 74.73 stroke average. Her best score and rank was a 3-over 219 for 12th at the Lady Paladin Invitational in late September. Pichardo and Moretti are the only two others to compete in all five tournaments so far.
Southern Miss opened the spring season last week at the Texas State Invitational, where for the second time this season it improved its score over each round. Darkness made for an early conclusion to Monday's 36-hole trip. Pichardo's 74 in the second matched a career-low out of 26 rounds.
The last time the team played this close to home was when it hosted the Golden Eagle Jam at Hattiesburg Country Club in Fall 2016. A week prior to that, it competed in the USA Intercollegiate in Mobile, Ala.
