HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Freshman Robbie Latter (Mississauga, Ontario) fired a 36-hole, three-under par 141 to hold down a 14th-place tie in leading Southern Miss after the opening day of the Mobile Sports Authority Intercollegiate Monday at the Magnolia Grove Crossings Golf Course.
The Golden Eagles, who played at the par 72, 7,212-yard course, shot rounds of 289 and 285 to end the opening day tied for seventh with a two-under 574.
"The course was there for the taking today," said Southern Miss golf coach Eddie Brescher. "This course is mostly a bombers' paradise with minimal penalties off the tee. Our ball striking as a team today was fantastic. The only place we struggled as a whole, was our green reading. There are some tricky breaks on these green complexes. A few of those breaks got us."
Latter shot a 72 over the first circuit and then tied his season-low 69 over the second round to collect the best score for the Golden Eagles. He collected three birdies over the final eight holes of his first round, while collecting just more birdies over his final 18 holes.
Following Latter in the individual scoring, senior Walker Kesterson (Hartsburg, Mo.) added a 72 and 71 for a one-under 143 to hold down a tie for 29th. Junior Brice Wilkinson (Madison, Miss.) collected a pair of even-par 72s for a 144 and a 35th-place tie.
Senior Matt Lorenz (Fairhope, Ala.) posted scores of 73 and 75, while sophomore Joey Kirkland (West Monroe, La.) registered a 75 and 73 as both ended the day with a 148 and a 60th-place tie.
"I'm very proud of our team for showing toughness and finishing strong today to leapfrog a few teams," said Brescher. "We preach it to our guys constantly, ever shot matters toward our national ranking. Every time you can pick up a shot and leapfrog a few teams, it's huge come year end. We are in a solid position to post a good number for the final round. Hopefully we can drop a few putts tomorrow and make a move."
The Golden Eagles were in ninth after the opening round, but tied with Louisiana-Lafayette for seventh place.
Texas State leads the team scoring after two rounds with a 23-under-par 553, followed by Florida State (559), Illinois (562), UAB and Louisville (563), Wofford (570), Southern Miss and Louisiana-Lafayette, South Alabama (579), Denver and Richmond (580), Illinois State (581) and WKU and Chattanooga (584) tied for 13th-place.
The final round starts with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. Fans can follow the action by clicking here.
