HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- One week since its last outing, the Southern Miss men's basketball team is looking forward to its next challenge, a Wednesday night road game at longtime rival Tulane (7 p.m. on ESPN+).
Daniel Sallerson and David Grubb have the streaming call, while John Cox will carry the game on the Southern Miss Learfield IMG Sports Network (Rock 104.5 in Hattiesburg/Laurel) and Gameday app.
The Golden Eagles were supposed to play at Southern Illinois last Saturday, but the game was mutually postponed to next season due to COVID-19 concerns.
NOTABLE
–    The Golden Eagles looked much more comfortable in Wednesday's home opener compared to its previous loss to Jacksonville, in which it fell behind 21-9 but still made it within three a few times. Against William Carey, the squad led by as much as 18 in the first half and shot 54.8 percent from the field, up from 30.8 against the Dolphins. Southern Miss is also 7-3 when leading at the half under Jay Ladner (3-20 when tied or trailing).
–    Tyler Stevenson was a beast in the paint, going 11-for-13 from the field to tie a career-high 27 points. He earned 12 free-throw attempts, the most by a Golden Eagle since Leonard Harper-Baker in a Jan. 12, 2019 win over UAB. Artur Konontsuk also scored 14 points off the bench, including matching a career-high with three treys (other time was against No. 7 Gonzaga in the Bahamas). Each of Southern Miss' last five wins have coincided with Konontsuk's last five double-figure scoring games.
–    LaDavius Draine enters the game with 932 points while seeking to become the program's 38th member of the 1,000-point club. The most-recent addition was Cortez Edwards, who reached the milestone in November 2018 at Troy. Draine also has 181 three-pointers to his name, which is 13 away from tying Casey Fisher (1984-88). Bernard Haslett holds the record (316 from 1990-94).
–    Southern Miss did not have its best luck shooting in the Nov. 28 opener, but a bright spot was the squad winning the rebounding battle 49-40. The 21 offensive boards marked its most since the 2015-16 opener at Memphis, and seven of the nine wins last year came when winning that category. This year's team has definitely been bolstered by more height and depth in the post, particularly with the additions of Tyler Morman (6-8), DeAndre Pinckney (6-8) and Denijay Harris (6-7).
–   Southern Miss has used seven starters over the first two games, with four doing it for the first time as Golden Eagles. Tae Hardy, Justin Johnson and DeAndre Pinckney are highly-touted junior college prospects, while Harris took a medical redshirt last year. He had 10 rebounds against William Carey, a team-high in the young season.
–   The Golden Eagles' 71.9-percent clip from the foul line last year ranked sixth in school history. Included in that was Draine making 23-straight to start C-USA play, the fifth-longest streak by in program history, and Stevenson improving by 20.8 percent. Stevenson also came up big with a pair of free-throws in the final 30 seconds of both the SIU and FAU wins last year. Southern Miss has so far averaged four more free-throw attempts per game than last season (18-14.3) but will look to improve its success rate.
–   Last year's Tulane contest was a bitter pill to swallow in Hattiesburg. The Green Wave scored nine-straight points to lead 26-17 with 5:09 left in the first half, and Southern Miss rallied from being down 12 with 2:37 remaining to get within 57-54 in the final 16 seconds. The Golden Eagles did, however, force 19 turnovers, one off a season-high.
–   LA Tech (86 meetings) is the only opponent on the schedule with more Southern Miss head-to-heads than Tulane (81). The Golden Eagles are looking to snap a three-game skid to the Green Wave. Ladner was victorious in his last trip to Devlin Fieldhouse, a 62-61 decision in December 2018, guiding Southeastern Louisiana from an 11-point deficit in the final four minutes. This year's Green Wave team includes Gabe Watson, who appeared in every game for Southern Miss from 2018-20 with 29 starts.
