NEW ORLEANS, La. -- Southern Miss held Tulane to 18-percent shooting from long range and forced 15 turnovers, but its own offensive struggles were too much to overcome in a 58-38 defeat inside Devlin Fieldhouse on Wednesday night.
There were a lot of nerves and hesitation for both teams in the early going as they combined to shoot 8-for-34 to start. Tulane hit a runner with 6:40 left to cut an 8:14 field-goal drought and lead 17-9 at 6:40.
Tulane (3-0) led 24-12 at the break, and after striking first in the second half, the closest Southern Miss would stay within was 40-26 at the 14:35 mark.
New Orleans native and freshman Jaron Pierre Jr. led the Golden Eagles with 11 points and six rebounds off the bench, while Tyler Stevenson had a team-high nine boards. The Green Wave had a pair of 15-point scorers in Jordan Walker and R.J. McGee.
The Golden Eagles (1-2) have a chance at a clean slate Saturday against South Alabama. Tip-off inside Reed Green Coliseum is at 2 p.m. CT.
