In her first game at Southern Miss, junior Fess Hawkins posted 10 points and 10 rebounds to help push the Lady Eagles past Nicholls, 63-50, Friday night at Reed Green Coliseum.
"It was a night for the newcomers," head coach Joye Lee-McNelis said. "Fess Hawkins, to have a double-double in her first game, it was amazing. We were able to watch Melyia Grayson flourish and you saw some of her natural abilities to score the basketball."
Grayson joined Hawkins in double figures with 10 points, all coming in the second half, in her collegiate debut. The Hattiesburg native also grabbed three rebounds.
Senior Allie Kennedy led the scoring attack for the Black and Gold with 14, going 6-of-8 from the field with a pair of 3's.
The trio of Hawkins, Grayson and Kennedy combined for 44 points in the win.
The Lady Eagles jumped out to a quick lead in the first quarter holding the Colonels to just 2-of-17 from the floor. Imani Carter hit a 3 near the end of the opening frame to help the Golden Eagles end the quarter on a 7-0 run to hold a 13-5 advantage.
A personal 4-0 run from Kennedy in the second quarter helped the Black & Gold extend their lead to nine going into the locker room at 29-20.
The Southern Miss post players made all the difference coming out of the locker as Grayson and Kelsey Jones each dropped four points in the quarter to push the lead to 15 at 46-31.
In the fourth, the Golden Eagles shot 53.8 percent from the floor to seal the eight-straight win in a season opener.
Lauren Gross, Kahia Warmsley and Brikayla Gray all recorded their first points in a Lady Eagle uniform.
Southern Miss will face a short turnaround returning to the court tomorrow at 6 p.m. to face cross-town foe William Carey.
