Men’s Golf Tied for Fifth After First Round at the Intercollegiate at The Grove

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Three Southern Miss players rank in the Top 20 of the individual standings, while the Golden Eagles shot an even-par 288 team score to place tied for fifth after the opening 18 holes of the Intercollegiate at The Grove event Monday at the Grove Club in College Grove, Tenn.
At the par 72, 7,368-yard course, junior Brian Richards (Gulf Breeze, Fla.) posted a team-high seven birdies to shoot a one-under par 71 in holding a 10th-place tie.
Both senior Matt Lorenz (Gulf Shores, Ala.) and freshman Robbie Latter (Mississauga, Ontario) were one stroke back of Richards with an even par 72 for a tie for 19th place, while freshman Bennett Ruby (Waterloo, Ontario) posted a 73 to hold a 25th-place tie.
Junior Brice Wilkinson (Madison, Miss.) holds down a tie for 45th-place with a 75 and junior Hunter Atkins (West Point, Miss.) registered an 81 for a 77th-place tie.
Host Middle Tennessee and Coastal Carolina each shot a team-score 284 to hold the team lead, followed by ULM (286), Mercer (287), Southern Miss and Appalachian State (288), Louisiana Tech (289), Lamar (291), Francis Marion (292), Western Carolina (297), Chattanooga and Troy (299) and WKU (302).
The team scores were calculated by taking the lowest four scores from the golfers of the six official players that participated for each team.
The Golden Eagles tee off from hole No. 1 at 9:40 and 9:50 a.m., Tuesday for the their final 18 holes in the event.
