Miners' Late Burst, Home-Court Advantage Too Much for Golden Eagles

EL PASO, Texas -- UTEP went 34-for-37 from the free-throw line and made the stops it needed late to defeat Southern Miss, 76-64, on Thursday night in the Don Haskins Center. It was the 10th-straight win by the home team in the series.
"It's very frustrating," head coach Jay Ladner said. "I have to try to figure this thing out. It was a hard-fought game, and UTEP put on a clinic at the foul line. It's hard for us to overcome that. We also have some young guys who sometimes won't have it. We don't have the personnel yet to have a handful of guys not on their game, and we really needed that help tonight."
Gabe Watson's three-pointer with 8:21 left gave the Golden Eagles a 52-51 lead, but the Miners responded with a 12-1 run that gave them a 63-53 advantage at 4:29. The Miners made their first 24 attempts at the foul line, and their 34 for the game trailed Tulsa's 37 in 2011 for the Southern Miss opponent record.
Jay Malone's three-pointer in the opening minute of the second half gave Southern Miss its first lead since 7-5. The teams jockeyed throughout the first 12 minutes with eight lead changes and six ties.
UTEP (10-6, 1-2 C-USA) was held to 4-for-23 shooting from beyond the arc, the fewest makes the Golden Eagles have allowed to a Division I team this year.
"I don't want us to have the excuse of being young anymore," Ladner said. "We may be that way in terms of age and class, but they've played enough. It went from trading baskets there to where the big run came off missed shots. We were standing and watching. I'll take responsibility for my guys in wins and losses. I thought we lost an opportunity to build a big lead early with how UTEP struggled handling and shooting the ball."
Southern Miss (4-12, 0-3 C-USA) will look to right the ship Saturday at UTSA. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. CT.
