HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss men's tennis team is back in action for its third-straight home match, this time hosting West Alabama on Thursday at 2 p.m. Admission is free.
This marks the third installment of an eight-match homestand through the end of February for the Golden Eagles.
A victory would give Southern Miss its first 4-0 start of Zubin Engineer's seven-year tenure at the helm. The Golden Eagles are 14-1 in singles play and 5-1 in doubles. Matthieu Peres boasts the best mark so far, going 3-0 and 2-0, respectively. Friday's shutout win over Florida A&M saw Peres and Alexander Gima rally to 12-10 and 10-8 wins, respectively, in their deciding set.
Five freshmen have seen action for the Golden Eagles through the first week, whereas last year's team featured Peres as the only one.Â
West Alabama, picked No. 16 in the Division II preseason poll, is playing its first regular-season contest after falling 5-2 in an exhibition at Jacksonville State. The Tigers had a stellar 2019 season, finishing 16-7 with a win over No. 6 Delta State and appearance in the NCAA South Regional. They were scheduled to play in Hattiesburg in 2018, but inclement weather canceled it.
