First-Place Finishes and Broken Records Grace Track & Field in Season Opener

Track & Field made quite the impression for the first meet of the Indoor season at the Blazer Invite.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Golden Eagles soared in their first meet of the indoor track & field season at the Blazer Invitational in Birmingham. They had two athletes with first-place finishes, and three school records were broken.

"We had great performances from Trey Johnson, Eric Richards, and Sandra Szpott. It was good to see for an early season meet. We still have much work to do before heading into the championship season. I feel very confident this young group."
Sandra Szpott earned first place in the 1000m with a time of 2:52.73, which also shattered the previous school record of 2:58.75 set by Jocelyn Lockhart in February of 2011. Eric Richards placed first in the high jump with a height of 7'01.75".
Continuing with the broken records, newcomer Dylan Evans set a new record for the 600m with his time of 1:24.00. In the 500m, Trey Johnson moved into the first place position in the Southern Miss record book with his third-place finish of 1:03.00. Landon Chalden placed ninth in the event, but in the record book he moves into the No. 5 all-time slot with his time of 1:05.78.
