HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Junior Brice Wilkinson (Madison, Miss.) fired a 36-hole score of 144 to help Southern Miss hold a sixth-place tie after the first day of the 19-team Graeme McDowell Invitational Monday in Birmingham, Ala.
Hosted by UAB at the par-72, 7,299-yard Greystone Golf and Country Club Founders Course, Wilkinson collected rounds of 75 and 69 to post a 19th-place tie in the individual championship.
The Golden Eagles shot team rounds of 298 and 291 for a 589 team score.
"Proud of our guys for grinding it out today," said Southern Miss coach Eddie Brescher. "The greens were much faster than the practice round and that played a major factor in the scores. I certainly expected the course to play easier than it did. It was a good test of golf for everyone."
Freshman Thongpipat Rattanaynon (Bangkok, Thailand) added rounds of 75 and 72 for a three-over 147, while freshman Robbie Latter (Missisauga, Ontario) holds a 40th-place tie after posting scores of 73 and 75 for a 148. Senior Walker Kesterson (Hartsburg, Mo.) shot scores of 75 and 75 for a 45th-place tie with a 150, while senior Matt Lorenz (Fairhope, Ala.) contributed scores of 80 and 78 for a 158 and an 87th-place tie.
North Florida leads the team scoring with a 12-under 564, followed by UAB (565), Arkansas State (573), Memphis (575), South Carolina (584) and Southern Miss and Chattanooga, who are tied for sixth.
The final round of the event takes place starting at 8 a.m., with players going off the No. 1 and No. 10 tees.
