Golden Eagles Fall Short in Senior Ashley Chapman's Career Night

LAFAYETTE, La. – Despite senior Ashley Chapman having a career night, the Southern Miss women's volleyball team fell in three sets (17-25, 18-25, 21-25) to Louisiana (4-3, 0-0 Sun Belt)  on the road. Â
Â
Chapman's eight kills come on the heels of the Alabama native recording just two kills in her first three seasons at Southern Miss. The former defensive specialist turned outside hitter tallied five of her kills in the matches final set and the other three in the second set.
Â
The Ragin' Cajuns, who tallied a .259 hitting percentage in the matches first set, were able to take a two-set lead after the Golden Eagles were unable to gain a lead inside a packed Earl K. Long Gym. Down by as many as 12 in the third set, Southern Miss was able to capitalize on a pair of runs to pull within two and push Louisiana to the end.
Â
Junior setter Piper Matsumoto dumped in one of her five kills to spark a 7-1 run that was highlighted by three consecutive kills from Chapman. The Golden Eagles were able to cut Louisiana's lead to 23-21 after the run, but a Ragin' Cajun block and kill subsequently sealed the match.
Â
Matsumoto, who split time with freshman Summer Johnson, tallied 17 assists to go with Johnson's eight. Junior Madison Lawler led the Golden Eagles with a game-high 18 digs.
Â
Head coach Stephanie Radecki was able to give valuable playing experience to 15 Golden Eagle players, which led to 12 of them recording at least one kill. Chapman's .208 hitting clip was a team-high for those that had at least 10 attempts. At the net, freshman Kess Krutsinger and junior Kaile Tuisamatatele paced the black and gold with two blocks each. Overall, Southern Miss stuffed five Louisiana attacks.
