HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Former Southern Miss catcher Cole Donaldson made his professional debut Monday afternoon after signing as an undrafted free agent last week with the Minnesota Twins.
Donaldson, who recently completed his three-year career with the Golden Eagles that included 160 games, a .251 batting average with 22 doubles, three triples, four home runs and 68 RBI, started his pro career with the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League (GCL) Twins.
The St. Charles, Mo., native made his debut at designated hitter for the Twins in the second game of a doubleheader against the GCL Pirates in Bradenton, Fla. He went 0-for-3 with a walk in his first game played.
Donaldson is one of two former Golden Eagles – LeeMarcus Boyd in the Colorado Rockies organization being the other - to be playing in professional baseball as undrafted free agents. Donaldson also is the second person to sign with the Minnesota Twins this summer, after Matt Waller was a Competitive Balance A selection, No. 39 pick, in June's Major League Baseball First-Year Players Draft.
With the addition of Donaldson, Southern Miss now has 14 former players playing professional minor league baseball.
