HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss men's golfer Brian Richards fired a final-round, four-under 67 to capture the Ryman Hospitality Intercollegiate individual championship Tuesday at the Richland Country Club in Nashville, Tenn.
"Our guys put up a great fight today," said Southern Miss men's golf coach Eddie Brescher. "After a slow start, we picked up the pace and started to bounce back with some birdies and eagles. Today was a great team effort from our guys. I couldn't be more proud of the way they fought. Upstate played great today and were tough to catch. Hats off to them for the win. We were trying our best to catch them coming down the stretch."
After shooting an even-par 35 over the first nine holes Tuesday on par-71, 6,943-yard course, the sophomore from Gulf Breeze, Fla., eagled the 10th-hole and then pulled away from the field with birdies on both the 15th and 17th holes.
Richards finished with a 36-hole score of 137 for a minus-five under par, beating Jordan Warnock of USC Upstate by two strokes. The tournament was shortened from 54 to 36 holes after rain delayed played during the morning on Monday.
It was the first collegiate individual tournament championship for Richards as it also marked the third different Golden Eagle to win an event this season.
"I am so proud of Brian's performance this week," said Brescher. "He is extremely talented and this win comes as no surprise from myself or his teammates. This is a great confidence booster for him heading into our last two regular season events."
The Golden Eagles shot a team score of 287 for a 576 stroke total, trailing only USC Upstate by three strokes in the team standings.
Junior Walker Kesterson (Hartsburg, Mo.) collected a second-round 72 to finish with a 144 total and a 13th-place tie, while freshman Joey Kirkland (West Monroe, La.) added a 74 for a 147 and a 23th-place tie. Junior Matt Lorenz (Gulf Shores, Ala.) collected a 38th-place tie with a round of 78 for a 152 total, while sophomore Hunter Atkins (West Point, Miss.) fired a 74 for a 154 and 52nd-place tie.
The Golden Eagles return to action at the Old Waverly Intercollegiate in West Point, Miss., April 15-16.
