HATTIESBURG, Miss. – After sweeping a three-game C-USA home series over the weekend, the Southern Miss baseball team looks to keep up its winning ways when they start a five-game road swing against in-state rival Ole Miss, Tuesday, April 9, in a 6 p.m., contest at Trustmark Park in Pearl, Miss.
The Golden Eagles (20-9) look to snap a four-game skid, as well as dropping their last three meetings at Trustmark Park, to the nationally ranked Rebels who enter play with a 23-10 overall record. Southern Miss also reentered a pair of polls with a No. 30 ranking by Collegiate Baseball and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers of America.
The sweep over Marshall last weekend marked the third over the first four weekends of Conference USA play for Southern Miss, as the squad also took all three games from Louisiana Tech and Old Dominion.
Â
Individually, Bryant Bowen continues to lead the team offensively as of late. He hit safely in all four games last week to run his team-best hitting streak for 2019 to 13 games. He collected the game-winning hit to extend his streak in the first game of a doubleheader, Saturday, to best Marshall with an RBI single. After Marshall registered a seven-run inning giving them a five-run advantage in the nightcap, Bowen spearheaded a four-run inning in the bottom of the frame with a two-run homer. In his next at bat an inning later, Bowen hit a shot to third for a hit that drove in the game-tying run.
During his 13-game hitting streak, he is hitting .453 (24x53) over that span with six doubles, four home runs and 22 RBI to go along with a .517 on-base percentage and a .792 slugging percentage. He started the week by hitting a first-inning grand slam against South Alabama.
Junior Matt Wallner belted two home runs last weekend to give him five for the season and 40 for his career. His career total ties him for seventh on the Golden Eagle career chart with current assistant coach B.A. Vollmuth (2009-11).
Â
Two other players, freshmen third baseman Danny Lynch and shortstop Will McGillis, who normally bat eighth and ninth in the order, respectively, each enjoyed a solid week. McGillis hit .455 (5x11) with three doubles and two RBI, while Lynch was .429 (6x14) with two RBI.
Senior right-hander Jarod Wright (0-2, 6.00 ERA) will make his fourth start of the year for the Golden Eagles, while the Rebels will counter with junior left-hander Zack Phillips (1-0, 5.04 ERA).
Following the Ole Miss contest, the Golden Eagles then travel to Miami this weekend with a three-game C-USA set with FIU, before finishing the swing next Tuesday in Mobile, Ala., at South Alabama.
