
Southern Miss Softball Defeats UTSA in Saturday Doubleheader

The Golden Eagles are now 21-16 overall and 7-7 in C-USA play.
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss Golden Eagles (21-16, 7-7 C-USA) defeated the UTSA Roadrunners (17-20, 6-8 C-USA) in both games of Saturday's doubleheader at the Southern Miss Softball Complex in Hattiesburg.

The Golden Eagles shutout the Roadrunners, 3-0 in game one and took an 8-2 decision in game two.
Â
Southern Miss junior right-handed pitcher Abby Trahan drew the start for the Golden Eagles in the circle in game one and was dominant. Trahan held the Roadrunners' bats in check and did allow a hit until the top of the fifth inning.

Trahan ended the day by notching her third consecutive complete-game shutout. The right-hander scattered three hits, issued two walks and tied-her season-high of nine strikeouts en route to collecting her tenth win of the season.

The Golden Eagles used runs scored in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to defeat the Roadrunners.

Destini Brown who had a big day for Southern Miss, scored the game's first run in the bottom of the fourth inning when she took advantage of a UTSA fielding error.

Southern Miss extended their lead, 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning after Karley Nichols scored on a perfectly executed squeeze bunt by Madison Rayner.

Brown capped off the scoring for the Golden Eagles with a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Brown's sixth inning home run marked her fourth of the 2019 season.

After shutting out UTSA in game one, Southern Miss did not slow down in game two and instead, scored eight runs on 11 hits.

Brown kicked off the scoring for the Golden Eagles in game two with a sacrifice fly to center field that allowed Caroline Casey to cross the plate.

The Golden Eagles added two more runs to the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth inning via an infield single from Nichols that scored Bre Blankenship and a sacrifice fly to left field from the bat of Chase Nelson that plated Samantha Papp.

The Roadrunners responded in the top of the fifth inning by rallying for two runs on an RBI single by Riley Grunberg and an RBI double by Kaitlin Lopez.

After entering the game in relief for starter Makenna Pierce, Southern Miss relief pitcher Bailie Springfield slammed the door on the Roadrunners scoring threat and escaped the inning without allowing a run.

Springfield tossed a total of three innings in the contest, allowed just one hit, issued one walk and struck out one.

Holding a one run lead entering the bottom of the fifth inning, Southern Miss collected five insurance runs to put the game away.

Sarah Van Schaik produced the Golden Eagles' first two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning by blasting a single to center field, plating Lacey Sumerlin and Brown.

Southern Miss added two more runs when Nichols reached base safely on a UTSA throwing error that also allowed Van Schaik and Beth Taylor to score.

The Golden Eagles final run of the day came courtesy of a Nelson RBI single to center field that scored Nichols.

Pierce (3-1) earned the win and Springfield was credited with the save.
