MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – With four weekends left in the regular season, the Southern Miss baseball team looks to keep pace with Florida Atlantic at the top of the Conference USA standings as they play at Middle Tennessee in a three-game league series at Reese Smith Jr. Field.
Game times are 6 p.m., Friday, before playing a 4 p.m., Saturday, contest, and a 1 p.m., tilt to conclude the series on Sunday.
The Golden Eagles (26-13 overall, 14-4 C-USA) bring a five-game winning streak into the weekend after sweeping Charlotte at home last weekend before scoring four in the bottom of the ninth to beat Louisiana-Lafayette on Tuesday and getting a three-home, eight-RBI performance from Hunter Slater in a 15-2 win at New Orleans.
Southern Miss and FAU are both 14-4 in league play and the two teams will play at Pete Taylor Park next weekend, May 3-5, and the Golden Eagles look to keep pace with the Owls as they continue their quest for a third-straight C-USA regular season crown.
Since Middle Tennessee joined C-USA for the 2014 season, the Golden Eagles captured all five previous series between the two clubs and currently holds a 14-game winning streak over the Blue Raiders (16-25, 9-9), who are tied for fifth in the league.
Offensively, junior Bryant Bowen continues to lead the squad in hitting with a .374 batting average, despite having his 22-game hitting streak snapped Wednesday at UNO. Bowen's streak was the longest in the nation and also the eighth longest in Southern Miss history.
Slater, who tied single-season school records for homers and RBI against the Privateers, ranks second at .335 with nine homers and a team-high 44 RBI. Freshman Danny Lynch ranks third on the squad at .321, while sophomore Gabe Montenegro is at .311 on the year.
