Wednesday night’s loss to the Rebels ended an 11-game winning streak for the Golden Eagles.
OXFORD, Miss. – The Southern Miss Golden Eagles (28-17, 11-7 C-USA) were defeated by the #17 Ole Miss Rebels (34-12, 11-6), 3-0 on Wednesday night in Oxford.
Â
Wednesday night's loss to the Rebels ended the Golden Eagles 11-game winning streak. The 11-game winning streak was the longest winning streak posted by any Southern Miss softball team since the 2000 season.
Â
Southern Miss ace Abby Trahan started the game about as efficient as any pitcher could, retiring the top of the Ole Miss batting order in order in the bottom of the first inning.
Â
Aside from the second inning, Trahan and the Golden Eagles defense held the Rebels' offense in check. Two timely hits, one by left fielder Tate Whitley and the other by shortstop Mikayla Allee, proved to be enough to propel Ole Miss to victory.
Â
Whitley produced the first runs of the game after sending a two-run triple to right center that scored Autumn Gillespie and Amanda Roth.
Â
Allee immediately followed with a single up the middle that allowed Whitley to score, making the score 3-0 in favor of the Rebels.
Â
Despite suffering the loss, Trahan who tossed 6.0 innings in which she scattered seven hits, allowed three runs (all earned), struck out three and did not issue any walks, pitched well for the majority of the contest. The junior right-hander now holds a record of 14-9 on the season.
Â
Ole Miss' Ava Tillman (8-2) earned the win after tossing 4.0 scoreless innings of relief in the contest. Tillman entered the game in the top of the fourth inning, replacing starter Molly Jacobsen in the circle.
Â
Right fielder Karley Nichols and shortstop Lacey Sumerlin paced the Golden Eagles in Wednesday night's game with two hits each. Nichols went 2-for-2 at the plate while Sumerlin went 2-for-3.
Â
Southern Miss will be back in action when they travel to Miami, Fla. for a three-game C-USA series against FIU beginning on Saturday, April 27. The Golden Eagles and the Panthers will play a doubleheader on Saturday. Game one of Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. (CT) and game two will follow shortly after the conclusion of game one. The two teams will conclude the series with a single-game matchup on Sunday, April 28 at 11:00 a.m. (CT).
